Discover our multi-sized Dopp Kit sewing pattern, your guide to creating a stylish and functional lined boxy bag. The pattern is named after the inventor Charles Doppelt, versions of this quintessential toiletries case have been in circulation since 1919. These bags can be made from pretty much anything; heavy weight fabrics like canvas, waxed cotton, denim, leather or nylon fabrics that have some structure on their own or lighter weight fabrics can be combined with batting or interfacing to give body. Bags can be lined with a fun cotton print or a water resistant fabric if you want to be able to wipe it clean. Pattern calls for webbing straps, but you can make you own or use leather straps and rivets to personalize your bag. The possibilities are endless.

Digital download includes step by step instructions with illustrations, and both print at home and print shop versions of the multi-sized pattern. Patterns are not layered, so you will be able to use all sizes from a single print copy.

Pattern has four versions:

X-Small : L 17.2cm ( 6 3/4”) W 8.9cm ( 3 1/2”) H 8.9cm (3 1/2”)

Small: L 20.3cm ( 8”) W 10.8cm ( 4 1/4”) H 10.8cm (4 1/4”)

Large: L 26.7cm (10 1/2”) W 14.6cm ( 5 3/4”) H 14.5cm (5 3/4”)

FABRIC & NOTION RECOMMENDATIONS

Main Fabric: Medium to heavy weight woven fabric like canvas, twill, denim, waxed cotton, leather, vinyl or heavyweight nylon or pre-quilted fabrics.

Lining: Lightweight woven fabric like quilting cotton, poplin, linen or nylon.

Bias binding: Use extra wide double fold bias binding or make your own by cutting 1.75” (4.5 cm) wide strips of your lining fabric (straight or cross grain is fine; it does not have to be cut on the bias).

Webbing: 1" / 2.5 cm wide webbing or belting of your choice.

Interfacing (optional): If you wish to add structure to your bag, interfacing or fleece interfacing can be applied to the wrong side of the main fabric. You may also wish to quilt the outside fabric.

Zipper: Non-separating zipper. Metal, plastic or nylon zippers will work. We recommend a #5 metal zipper like YKK. It is best to buy the exact length specified, so you don’t have to shorten it.
